The first chapter of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne begins by setting up the setting and introductions in the story. A group of people are gathered outside of the prison and the two necessities for founding a colony are stated. The rose bush outside of the prison door is also brought to the readers attention as a symbol that may be brought up again in the future.
