Hester is released from prison, however she chooses to stay in Boston. Hester finds a small cabin at the edge of town to live in and remain separated from the people of the town. However, Hester is excellent with sewing and takes up a job in her home of sewing items for the important people in the town. Hester sews for practically every event in town except for marriages, because of her past. Even though Hester has this job, she still feels so lonely and separate from the other people in the town. In effort to fill that void, Hester begins charity work, however she still feels worthless and separate from the people.
