Scarlet Letter Chapter 2 Summary


The crowd outside of the prison watches as a young girl by the name of Hester Prynne is introduced and put upon a scaffold in the city where she is to be punished for her actions. The women in the crowd criticize her and it is brought up that Hester has been convicted as an adulteress and that being the significance of the scarlet letter A which is embroidered in her gown. Hester thinks about the previous events in her life as she stands on the scaffold and is criticized by the people. As a result of these thoughts, Hester squeezes the infant and causes it to cry out.
