Dimmesdale is continuously enticed by Chillingworth during his suffering. Reverend Dimmesdale does not take these remarks lightly. During this time of illness, the reverend delivers some very powerful messages. Dimmesdale has also begun to have very powerful visions, some even involving Pearl and Hester, that have an impact on these sermons. Dimmesdale also feels like he has sinned majorly and can not be forgiven and because of this, he begins to physically hurt himself as punishment. While one of these punishments was occurring, Dimmesdale thought that a fix for his agony would be to go to the scaffold that Hester had been on in the past.
